Organic vs conventional produce: Researchers at Stanford University found NO strong evidence that organic foods are more nutritious or carry fewer health risks than conventional alternatives. However, the new study did find that consumption of organic foods can reduce the risk of exposure to pesticides. Many consumers are willing to pay a premium for organic products, spending twice as much for organicly grown food.   RnR

Give me more ‘sales’: Deep discounts are hurting the bottom line? During the recession, retailers nationwide provided more sales to lure ‘us’ into their stores.  Many of us won’t even think of buying merchandise until its 70% off or more.  But is this ‘discount’ strategy back firing for retailers?  BTW: The ‘profit growth’ for retailers was cut in half between 2006 and last year. (According to Retail Metrics – a research firm).  JC Penny and Lowes Home Improvement tried the NO sales in favor of everyday low prices …and it didn’t work.  While,  Wal-Mart has successfully branded itself as having ‘everyday low prices’.  http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/deal-junkies-hurt-stores-profits-17137748

On Monday, President Obama visited parts of Louisiana hit hard by Hurricane Isaac.  The president praised Republican Governor Bobby Jindal and state and local officials for their organization and help during recovery efforts.  FYI: Tens of thousands of people are still without power, that means no air conditioning to
provide relief from the recent heat index of over 100 degrees.  RnR

The Democratic National Convention officially opens in Charlotte today. Delegates will officially nominate Barrack Obama as the party’s presidential candidate once again. He’ll accept that nomination on Thursday. Scheduled
to speak tonight:  First Lady Michelle Obama and Nancy Keenan, the president of the National Abortion Rights Action League.   **Abortion is an issue on which the two major parties hold very different positions. The Democratic Party platform takes a strong pro-choice position while the Republican Party’s platform contains strong pro-life language…   RnR

Amen:  Jena Lee Nardella (executive director of Blood: Water Mission) will offer tonight’s closing prayer at the convention.   “Blood: Water Mission” focuses on combating the HIV/AIDs crisis and water crises in Africa.  Nardella started
Blood: Water Mission (at age 22) with the Christian music group Jars of Clay.

Volunteers needed: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triad needs close to 1,000 adults to step up and become volunteers. There are NO qualifications to being a volunteer other than your willingness to commit one hour a week to spend time with a child.   www.bbbsnc.org/
