Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30) will talk about “The New Generation Gap” at Central Library tonight (Wed, Nov 9), from 7-8 pm. Bauerlein, an Emory University professor, asks the question “What is the main reason adolescents go online? To contact one another.” That’s what digital tools mean to them — a window to their own age group. His book has sparked a robust discussion on the changing patterns of interaction among young people. The Dumbest Generation weaves together a plethora of alarming research findings, all indicating that American’s youth know little about history and politics and have developed a “brazen disregard of books and reading.” Sponsored by Guilford Technical Community College.
