One Piedmont woman spent Sunday delivering meals to more than two dozen families. Amanda Requena wanted to help out her community of Southmont… so, she teamed up with the Southmont Volunteer Fire Department to feed people all across Davidson County.
For those who couldn’t attend the special dinner, food was delivered right to their homes. This is the first year for the Southmont event, but organizers said they hope to make it an annual event for the community.

They came out never mind the rain, to celebrate the next chapter for Gideon Grove United Methodist Church.  Around 45 people, huddled under tents and umbrellas, came out to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the new church.  Sunday’s event took place a year after the 118-year-old church was lost to a fire and a week after a man pleaded guilty to setting it.

A Concord church handed out more than 700 toys to children who wouldn’t have had a Christmas during a special service Sunday morning. Kingdom Purpose Ministries partnered with an area restaurant to collect the toys. “This is a place today that we’re all coming together, celebrating something in common, which is love and giving,” said Rusty Price, senior pastor of Kingdom Purpose Ministries.

Greensboro police delivered food and gifts throughout the city as part of the department’s annual “Operation Yuletide.”  Greensboro police employers and volunteers put together boxes loaded with turkeys, hams and other holiday fixins and delivered wrapped gifts to various families.
This is the third year that the Greensboro Police Department has sponsored the program.  “When they see us coming with those packages all wrapped up, and the food, the smiles and the gratitude, the ‘thank yous,’ it’s overwhelming,” said Officer E.Y. Watkins, who helped organize the event.

The Panthers are headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 after beating the Saints 17-13 Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.
Carolina was down 13-10 with 55 seconds left, when Cam Newton connected with Ted Ginn for a huge play, putting them in field goal range.   A few plays later, Newton threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Domenik Hixon with 23 seconds left, lifting the Panthers to victory.
The Panthers face the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday. Panthers Coach Ron Rivera said there is still work to do and plenty of things to correct.
