(Retired) Major General Hubert M. Leonard – This former Mayor of Thomasville served in both the Marines and the Army during his military career. Mr. Leonard was one of the originators of the ever expanding Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony in Thomasville 25 years ago.
What does Memorial Day mean to you? A long weekend at the Beach? The unofficial start to summer? Cook-outs with family and friends? The original intent of Memorial Day: A day to remember those who have served our country…giving the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, for the freedom we all enjoy in America.

North Carolina joins 30 other states in preserving the definition of traditional marriage (marriage between one man and one woman) within our State Constitution. Voters overwhelming approved ‘Amendment One’ or the Marriage Protection Amendment by a 61% to 39% margin. All but seven of the state’s 100 counties voted FOR the amendment. http://ncfpc.org/stories/120508s2.html
Amendment One states, “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized by this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party, nor does this section prohibit the courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.”
Back on May 1st, a coalition of law enforcement officials, district attorneys and family law attorneys released a joint statement saying that, “the proposed (marriage) amendment will not impact legal protections against domestic violence for unmarried women and others.” http://ncfpc.org/stories/120502s1.html
