The middle class is shrinking: According to new census figures, 1 in 2 Americans live in poverty. Many middle-class Americans are dropping below the low-income threshold – roughly $45,000 dollars for a family of four – because of pay cuts, a forced reduction of work hours or a spouse losing a job. Winston-Salem property owners want to bring back a ‘lawn parking ban’ proposal that was tabled a few years ago. The proposal is mainly over rental properties with multiple tenants and where they park their vehicles. A committee is looking into possible ordinances and plans to discuss options with the entire city council in March. After 8 and a half years, the Iraq War has come to a quiet end. The official ending of the Iraq War has come two weeks earlier than was necessary under the terms of the security agreement signed by the U.S. and Iraqi governments in 2008, which stipulated that the troops must be gone by Dec. 31.

The National Retail Federation saying that the average American has completed far less of their holiday shopping than in previous years. One congregation in Alamance County is once again being the hands (and feet) of Jesus at Holly Hill mall…by providing FREE gift wrapping and an encouraging word to shoppers over the next (10 days) week and a half. Westside Fellowship Church has rented out two spaces at the mall to, as Senior Pastor Kurt Ward suggests, “to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas.” The church is also using part of the space for children’s ministry.

A new study finding that one in five scientists who claim to be atheists actually attend a church service one or more times a year. The motivators for attending: a social or personal connection such as the desire to see friends or a Christian spouse. (Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion). The director of the American Humanist Association telling the Christian Post that the study’s findings didn’t surprise him saying that “Like many who do (or don’t) believe in a god, these folks likely attend church for the community experience, or the cultural connection to the religion.”
Representative Howard Coble is being treated for an upper respiratory illness. The 80 year old representative, who had been fighting a cold for over a week, was admitted to a Washington, D.C. hospital yesterday afternoon.
