The issue of undocumented children crossing the border has been highlighted recently. From October 2013 to June 2014, more than 57,000 unaccompanied children, mostly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, have been caught illegally crossing the US – Mexico border.
By law, unaccompanied (undocumented) children from countries that don’t border the US must be handed over to the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours of being detained. The government is responsible for caring for the children until they are united with a relative or sponsor in the U.S. while waiting for immigration court hearings to proceed. http://goo.gl/EidDdx
In a seperate story, commissioners in Surry County are frustrated over illegal immigration, so they are sending a clear message to lawmakers in Washington DC and officials in Central America – “Enforce human trafficking laws or face a boycott of your products in North Carolina.” Commissioners plan to vote on the resolution at their next meeting… http://myfox8.com/2014/08/18/boycott-threat-over-illegal-immigration-proposed-in-surry-co/
